Penelope Cruz Sanchez is the daughter of
Eduardo Cruz, a Madrid hairdresser, and Encarna Sanchez. She was a fervent
performer when she was a kid and would reenact TV commercials for family
amusement. However, she decided to concentrate on dance. After studying
classical ballet for nine years at the Spanish National Conservatory, she
continued her education under a variety of famous dancers. Her true calling was
discovered at the age of 15, when she topped 300 girls at an audition for a
talent agency. She was offered roles in Spanish television and music videos.
The contract brought her many performances, which opened the door to a career
in the big screen. Cruz made her movie debut in The Greek Labyrinth (1993) (The

international fame), and the same year she was the lead actress in the
thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes (1997), a huge hit in Spain
that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). In 1998, her luck changed when
she took home an award for the best Actress Goya for the industry-related movie
comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos (1998). Cruz also made a few attempts at
English-language films, but her first big international success was Almodovar's
All About My Mother (1999) in which she played a sexy but well-meaning nun.
