Rachel Emily Nichols was born in Augusta, Maine, the daughter of Alison and James Nichols, a schoolteacher. She is of English, French Canadian, German, Irish, Italian and Scottish ancestral roots. Cony High School was her high school in Augusta. She graduated with a diploma in math and a competitive high jump.
